Checkmat is a top shelf International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Association and BJJ Competition Team. Checkmat was founded in 2008 by Leo Vieira who is the head of Checkmat with his brothers Ricardo Vieira and Leandro Vieira. Checkmat’s worldwide headquarters is based in Sao Paulo, Brazil.


Checkmat has affiliate schools worldwide in countries including: Brazil, United States, Japan, England, Sweden, Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Iceland, Greece, Australia, Germany, Spain, Malaysia, Paraguay, Ireland, and Singapore.

Leo Vieira

aka “Leoninho” is the eldest of the three brothers. Leo has won several medals and Championships in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Championships, Pan American Championships and in the the ADCC, the most elite grappling event in the world.


Ricardo Vieira

aka “Ricardinho” or “Rico” Vieira is a 9x World Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Champion (six times IBJJF Champion and three time CBJJO Champion). Ricardo is well known in the BJJ community and is considered one of the top submission grappling coaches in the world.


Leandro Vieira

is known as one of the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teachers in the world. Like his brothers, Leandro is also a world class BJJ competitor with numerous medals and championships in tournaments such as the Brazilian BJJ Nationals, Paulisto Jiu-Jitsu Championships, Las Vegas International Open and of coarse the World Jiu-Jitsu Championships.

“Checkmat” the name came from the Chess terminology “Checkmate” because of the strategic similarities of the game and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
